Edwin Díaz addressed a walk-off loss on August 7, 2026, taking responsibility for the outcome and pointing to his slider as the main problem in the game.
"I think the slider. I think fast was great today. Just, you know, I miss the slider right in the middle and pay off," Díaz said. He added that his fastball had been sharp, but a single mistake with the slider proved costly, noting, "my football today was great. You know, I just made one mistake and pay off."
Díaz described his own standards who needs to be precise with his location. "I'm a bigly pitcher so I got to make pitches," he said. He also noted that his delivery had actually improved compared to his previous outing, when his mechanics were inconsistent. "my delivery was better today than than normal. I was messing up. You know, my last start was my my f was side to side," he stated.
He explained that the slider is normally his strikeout pitch, but he missed his location with it on a two-strike count. "my slider is the strike out pitch. And today, you know, I miss with two strike that pitch right in the middle," Díaz noted. He also mentioned that he has not thrown many major league innings the 2026 season while working back from surgery.
Despite the setback, Díaz said he remains positive and focused on improving. "I'm still positive. I'm always positive. Just got to do my job better and have this thing to win," he said. He added that he trusts his catcher and works closely with his teammates and the pitching coaches to resolve the issue, explaining, "I trust my catcher, you know, and throw my teammates. I throw everyone in the pitching coaches and we will figure it out."
Looking ahead, Díaz said his focus is on locating his slider consistently in his next outing. "now I got to find it tonight, you know, tomorrow when it came to the field because that's my pitch," he said.
