Dave Roberts outlined the Los Angeles Dodgers’ roster plans on August 30, 2026.
Roberts said Will Smith is expected to catch every other day against the Cardinals, beginning with two starts behind the plate. The Dodgers will use Dalton Rushing primarily as a pinch hitter while he continues building up his arm. Roberts described Rushing’s simple swing and power threat as qualities that could help him in that role.
The Dodgers will play Alex Freeland at second base against pitchers while continuing to determine how to distribute playing time. Roberts called Freeland a good defender and noted that he knows what it is like to be with the Dodgers. Roberts also said Justin Roleski will return to the bullpen.
Roberts stated that the Dodgers have 25 games remaining in the regular season. He said established players receive more leeway based on their past contributions, while the team continues to evaluate them daily. He added that the Dodgers want to reduce mental mistakes, improve baserunning and eliminate empty at-bats during September, while viewing their bench as strong in positional versatility, platoon flexibility and power potential.
Edwin is expected to throw another live batting-practice session before beginning a rehabilitation assignment. Ben Casparius is temporarily shut down because of arm fatigue, with no return date established. Roberts said Brandon Gomes informed Ben that he was designated for assignment and credited Ben with helping the Dodgers win a championship in the 2025 season.
The Dodgers will proceed with the specified roster evaluations, including Smith’s catching schedule, Rushing’s pinch-hitting usage, Freeland’s work at second base and Edwin’s next live session.
