Dave Roberts outlined the Dodgers' plan for the final three regular-season games before their playoff bye at a September 24, 2026, press conference.

The Game Network — Where History Is Kept

Roberts said, "today is going to be a full game for everyone," while adding that he plans to rest several position players against a starter and could abbreviate the game on Sunday. He also said he expects Roki Sasaki to pitch one inning that night, according to his account.

Roberts said the Dodgers would use their five-day break before the NLDS to refresh players and prepare with simulated games and live batting practice, with watch parties planned at the ballpark. He noted that Max Muncy, Freddie Freeman, Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Tommy Edman and Blake Snell could benefit from the rest. Roberts also said Ohtani's first two games back had been encouraging, while the Dodgers need Ohtani healthy and strong for the postseason.

Roberts stated that Ohtani could receive five games and approximately 20 to 23 at-bats to regain form. He said the Dodgers' offense and pitching must work hand in hand rather than relying only on pitching and defense, and he plans to manage Yoshinobu Yamamoto in October with a longer leash similar to the 2025 season.

Roberts described Bruce as a close friend and mentor, said he played for him and considered him one of the best managers ever. He attributed to Bruce an influence on his game feel and decision-making, while noting that Bruce won three championships in San Francisco and another in Texas. Roberts also joked that Bruce had gotten older but looked younger since leaving managing.

Roberts' stated next steps are to distribute rest across the remaining games, use the break for simulated games, live batting practice and ballpark watch parties, and prepare Yamamoto and the rest of the Dodgers for the NLDS.
