Tarik Skubal said on October 2, 2026, that the Los Angeles Dodgers named him their National League Division Series Game 1 starter.
Skubal said he used the seven off days for two bullpen sessions instead of one and feels ready, strong and healthy. He described the assignment as an honor and a privilege and said he wants to put the team in position to win.
Skubal stated that he will approach the playoff game as he would any other game, relying on his preparation, execution and game plan because “the game of baseball doesn't change.” He added that his improved results over the prior month came from staying with his process, becoming more comfortable in his own skin and building familiarity after joining the Dodgers in a midseason transition. He also said he has spent time getting to know the catchers and teammates.
The Los Angeles Dodgers coaching staff trusted Skubal to take the ball, and the Dodgers named him for Game 1. Skubal said Dodgers fans embraced him from his first home start, including an ovation despite his not pitching especially well. He claimed that approximately 50,000 fans attended that start and joked that, although there was a bobblehead giveaway for somebody else, “I'll say they were there for me.”
Skubal said the Dodgers have won back-to-back championships and referenced playoff conditions expected to include triple-digit heat. He will prepare to make the Game 1 start under those conditions.
