Hunter Goodman was the driving force, going 4-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs. He capped the decisive third inning with a three-run homer to left field, and added a solo shot in the seventh for good measure. TJ Rumfield chipped in three hits and three RBIs, while Kyle Karros went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs as part of Colorado's 16-hit night.
Kansas City had built its lead through Michael Massey's sacrifice fly that scored Isaac Collins, Jac Caglianone's two-run homer, and a solo shot from Salvador Perez, pushing the score to 4-0. But Colorado answered immediately in the bottom of the third. Karros doubled to right, scoring both Willi Castro and Tyler Freeman, and TJ Rumfield followed with a single to center that brought Karros home. Then Hunter Goodman delivered the blow that changed the game, a three-run homer to left that scored Karros and Rumfield and put the Rockies ahead 6-4 for good, per the final go-ahead play. Colorado kept adding on: Rumfield's fourth-inning single scored Jake McCarthy, Willi Castro homered in the fifth, Goodman went deep again in the seventh, and an eighth-inning flurry featuring Rumfield, Goodman and a Mickey Moniak sacrifice fly pushed the margin to 12-4.
Luinder Avila started for Kansas City and did not survive the third inning, charged with 6 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks over 2.2 innings, taking the loss. The Royals' bullpen worked 5.1 innings and allowed 6 runs. Kansas City tried to rally late, with John Rave's ninth-inning homer and a Starling Marte groundout that scored Carter Jensen, but the deficit was too large to overcome.
