The game stayed tight into the eighth. Then it didn't. The Cardinals turned a tied game into a three-run cushion in the bottom of the eighth, riding two errors and a couple of clutch swings to a 7-4 win over the Colorado Rockies.

Brett Sullivan supplied the biggest blow of the night for St. Louis, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a walk. His sixth-inning shot pulled the Cardinals within striking distance, and the rest of the lineup did the closing work. JJ Wetherholt added two hits, including a double, scored twice and drove in two runs, while Ivan Herrera collected four hits in five at-bats.
The decisive sequence came in the eighth. With the score tied 4-4, Wetherholt doubled to center, and Nathan Church and Masyn Winn both scored on a fielding error by center fielder Cole Carrigg, putting St. Louis back on top. Herrera followed with a single to center that brought Wetherholt around to make it 4-7. Earlier, Alec Burleson had given the Cardinals an early lift with a solo homer to right center in the fifth, and Jimmy Crooks' sacrifice fly and Winn's double had produced runs in the third.
Colorado twice fought back into the game. Hunter Goodman singled home McCarthy in the first inning to open the scoring, and Brett Sullivan — wait, it was B. Sullivan's homer with Castro aboard that cut the deficit to 3-4 in the sixth. Goodman tied it again in the eighth with a solo home run to left before the Cardinals' three-run answer put it away. Rockies starter Tanner Gordon took the loss, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits over 3.1 innings, and the bullpen behind him surrendered 3 runs (3 earned) across 3.2 innings.
Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy worked 5.2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits with 4 strikeouts. George Soriano picked up the win in relief, and Riley O'Brien closed it out with a scoreless inning for his 29th save of the season. St. Louis improved to 59-59, having snapped a stretch with this win, while Colorado fell to 46-72.
