Boston tied it in the sixth. Arizona untied it in the tenth. In between, the lead changed hands twice, and neither bullpen could hold serve until it mattered most. The Diamondbacks escaped Fenway Park with a 7-6 win that took extra innings to settle.

Mickey Gasper delivered the swing that turned the game inside out. In the sixth inning, with Boston trailing 5-2, Gasper homered to right center, scoring Wilyer Abreu and Willson Contreras ahead of him to tie the score at 5-5. He finished 1-for-3 with the three-run shot, his third of the season, and drove in a game-high three runs. Nick Sogard also went deep, going 2-for-4 with a solo homer in the first inning that opened the scoring and gave Boston an early lead.

Arizona answered in the tenth. Nolan Arenado singled to shortstop off Andruw Monasterio to drive in Gabriel Moreno, putting the Diamondbacks back in front 6-5 in a play that gave Arizona a lead it would not relinquish. Jose Fernandez followed with a walk that brought home Max Kepler for an insurance run, making it 7-5. Boston answered with a run of its own in the bottom half when Willson Contreras grounded out to third, scoring Ceddanne Rafaela, but the rally stalled at 7-6.

Boston starter Payton Tolle allowed 3 runs on 6 hits over 5.0 innings with 6 strikeouts, while Arizona's Brandon Pfaadt worked 5.2 innings and allowed 5 runs on 7 hits with 8 strikeouts and no walks. Jovani Moran took the loss for Boston, allowing 2 runs on 1 hit while walking 3 in just 1.0 inning. Jonathan Loaisiga picked up the win for Arizona, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with 1 hit allowed. Lars Nootbaar had powered part of Arizona's midgame surge with a two-run homer in the sixth, part of a 1-for-2 night, while Gabriel Moreno drove in two runs on a fifth-inning double.

Arizona improved to 67-61 and snapped nothing dramatic but extended its momentum with a first win after a loss, while Boston fell to 68-59, its first loss after a win. Pfaadt sits five strikeouts shy of 500 for his career after finishing with 8 punchouts on the night.
