Blue Jays overwhelm Guardians behind Cease and Guerrero

The Toronto Blue Jays turned an early lead into a rout, overwhelming the Cleveland Guardians with a second-inning burst and cruising to a shutout victory. Dylan Cease anchored the performance with a scoreless outing.

Cease kept Cleveland off the board while Toronto’s offense continued to add pressure. Vladimir Guerrero supplied the central offensive performance, contributing both power and timely run production.

Guerrero’s double brought Brett Bateman home in the first, giving Toronto the lead. In the second, George Springer reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed Andrés Giménez and Myles Straw to score, with a throwing error by Angel Genao also part of the play. Guerrero then homered, bringing Bateman and Springer across the plate. Myles Straw’s double brought Ernie Clement home in the third, and later scoring plays by Springer and Guerrero extended the advantage. Josh Smith homered in the eighth, while Nathan Lukes’ single brought Sean Keys home in the ninth.

Joey Cantillo took the loss for Cleveland after Toronto’s early pressure produced a difficult outing. The Guardians never scored, and Chase DeLauter was among the few bright spots with a strong offensive showing.

The one-inning burst in the second defined the night. Toronto then kept adding insurance, leaving Cleveland searching for an answer throughout the game.
