Chicago struck first in the opening inning when Munetaka Murakami scored on Brenton Doyle reaching on a fielding error by Hao Yu Lee. Colson Montgomery’s double then brought home Chase Meidroth, Kyle Teel and Brenton Doyle, before Miguel Vargas’ double scored Montgomery. Vargas added another scoring blow in the third, homering with Doyle scoring.

Detroit’s offense kept working its way back, then broke the game open in the eighth. Sean Newcomb took the loss for Chicago after allowing Detroit’s late surge, while the Tigers’ bullpen protected the advantage behind Jansen.
