Cortes supplied the turning point after Oakland had steadily closed the gap. His production, along with Zack Gelof’s power, fueled the Athletics’ surge.

The Angels built their advantage through Denzer Guzman’s home run, which brought Mike Trout and Vaughn Grissom home. Oakland answered with Lawrence Butler’s triple, Jeff McNeil’s fielder’s-choice play and a string of seventh-inning scoring plays. Cortes then homered to bring Alika Williams home and put Oakland in front, before Gelof homered with Butler scoring to extend the lead.

Los Angeles mounted one last threat in the ninth, when Christian Moore’s single brought Jose Siri across, but Hogan Harris closed the game and recorded the save. Sam Bachman took the loss for the Angels, while Luis Medina earned the win for Oakland.

The Angels had the early control, but Oakland’s late comeback changed the game’s mood and stopped Los Angeles from protecting its lead.
