Torkelson drove Detroit’s offense throughout the game. His triple helped tie the game in the second, and his homer in the seventh extended the lead.

After Spencer Torkelson’s triple brought Eduardo Valencia and Brett Callahan home to tie the game, Dillon Dingler’s single scored Kevin McGonigle and Eduardo Valencia in the third, putting Detroit in front. Dingler later reached on a fielder’s choice as Valencia scored on a fielding error, and Torkelson’s homer added insurance.

Pittsburgh answered in the eighth. Nick Gonzales’ single brought Bryan Reynolds home, Ryan O’Hearn’s single scored Oneil Cruz, and Rafael Flores Jr.’s homer brought Nick Gonzales and Ryan O’Hearn across. Detroit’s bullpen then held the lead, with Kenley Jansen closing the ninth.

Jackson Jobe anchored Detroit’s start and earned the win, while Bubba Chandler took the loss after the Tigers broke through in the third. The late rally made it tense, but Detroit’s earlier burst proved enough.
