Ronny Mauricio provided the defining power display for the Mets, homering in the seventh and again in the ninth. His production extended the lead and gave New York a firm grip on the finish.
The turning point came in the seventh, when A.J. Ewing's homer brought Carson Benge and Francisco Alvarez home and gave the Mets the lead. Mauricio followed with another homer to extend it. Brett Baty later reached on a fielding error by Nasim Nuñez, allowing Carson Benge to score, and Mauricio's late homer brought A.J. Ewing home.
Washington's only scoring play came in the third, when Abimelec Ortiz's sacrifice fly brought Nasim Nuñez across. Jake Irvin kept the Nationals within reach early, but the Mets broke through after Jonah Tong's start and the New York bullpen protected the advantage.
The Mets extended their winning streak, while the Nationals' losing streak continued. The game stayed within reach until the late rally made the difference.
