Jared Jones anchored Pittsburgh's effort with a scoreless start, and the Pirates' bullpen maintained the margin behind him. Ty Madden also kept Detroit scoreless during his outing, but Pittsburgh had already created separation.

Konnor Griffin put Pittsburgh ahead in the first with a homer to left-center field. Jake Mangum then brought Spencer Horwitz home with a single in the second, before Billy Cook's double brought Nick Gonzales across in the fourth. Griffin added another run-producing single in that inning, bringing Cook home.

Detroit finally broke through in the seventh, when Kevin McGonigle homered to left-center field. Eduardo Valencia followed with another homer to the same area, but Mason Montgomery closed the ninth without allowing further damage.

Pittsburgh extended its winning streak, while Detroit's late power was not enough to overcome the early pitching control.
