Mickey Moniak carried Colorado's offense for much of the night, going 2-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI. His three-run blast in the third inning, a 406-foot shot to right that scored McCarthy, turned a tied game into a two-run Rockies lead. On the other side, Fernando Tatis went 5-for-5 with 2 RBI for San Diego, driving in a run with a single in the second and again in the sixth, when his hit brought home Sheets to tie the game at 4-4.
The ninth inning decided it. With the score tied 7-7, Bogaerts' sacrifice fly to center scored Merrill, and a Colorado challenge on the call at the plate was upheld. It was the only lead of the game that held to the final out, capping an evening that saw both clubs trade the advantage repeatedly, from Castro's homer and Julien's tying single in the third to Tovar and Moniak doubles in the seventh that briefly put Colorado back on top.
Colorado's bullpen unraveled late. Jimmy Herget took the loss after retiring just one batter, allowing a run on a hit and two walks. The Rockies committed four errors on the night, including a costly one by third baseman Castro in the seventh and another by right fielder McCarthy in the eighth, both of which led directly to San Diego runs.
