Nothing separated the teams until the eighth inning, and even then it took only one swing. Reid Detmers made sure a single run would be enough, and the Angels beat the Royals 1-0 at Angel Stadium.

Detmers was the story from the first pitch. He worked eight scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out 11. The right-hander needed just 92 pitches to get through eight, and Ben Joyce closed it out with a scoreless ninth, striking out two for his second save of the season. The Angels' bullpen and rotation combined to hold Kansas City to zero runs on the day.
The only run came in the eighth. With the game tied 0-0, Nolan Schanuel singled to right, and Jose Siri scored to put the Angels ahead 1-0. The single stood as the decisive blow, part of a 3-for-3 night for Schanuel that also produced his only RBI of the game.
Kansas City starter R. Dobnak matched Detmers for most of the night, allowing four hits and no runs over 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. But the bullpen behind him could not hold the line. Nate Pearson came on and gave up the game's only run in his lone inning of work, taking the loss. The Royals managed just two hits as a team and could not solve Detmers or Joyce.
The result snapped a losing skid for Los Angeles, which improved to 49-75 with the win. Kansas City fell to 50-74. Detmers improved to 4-8 on the season with a 3.78 ERA, while Pearson dropped to 1-1 with his first loss of the year.
