Manny Machado carried the load all night, going 2-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI. His two-run homer to center in the eighth erased Miami's lead and tied the game at 3-3. Jackson Merrill followed with a solo shot to right center that put the Padres ahead for good. Machado had also doubled in the fifth inning to drive in a run, keeping San Diego within reach before the late surge.
The eighth inning decided it. Machado's homer, scoring Cronenworth, tied the game at 3-3. Merrill's homer immediately after gave San Diego a 4-3 lead. Luis Campusano added the final run with a single to left that scored Rengifo, capping the four-run outburst.
Miami built its early lead on Kyle Stowers' solo homer to right in the third and a pair of second-inning runs, one scoring on a throwing error by catcher Campusano and the other on a Graham Pauley single that brought home Griffin Conine. Starter Janson Junk held the Padres to 1 run over 4.2 innings, but the bullpen unraveled late. Lake Bachar took the loss after allowing 4 runs on 5 hits in just 1.0 inning of relief, while the Miami bullpen as a whole surrendered 4 runs over 4.1 innings. Walker Buehler started for San Diego and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) with 7 strikeouts over 5.1 innings, keeping the Padres within range before the offense came alive.
Wandy Peralta picked up the win after a scoreless inning of relief, and Mason Miller closed it out for his 27th save. San Diego improved to 53-53, extending its winning streak to three games, while Miami fell to 52-54, its 12th straight loss.
