Griffin Canning worked around the big inning to earn the win, allowing just 1 hit over 3.0 innings with 4 strikeouts and no runs. Mason Miller closed it out with a scoreless inning, striking out 2 to secure his 28th save. San Diego's bullpen as a whole covered 6.1 innings and allowed just 1 run.
The fourth inning did all the damage. Jackson Merrill singled to left to score Cronenworth and give the Padres a lead they would not relinquish, with France advancing to second and Machado to third on the play. Luis Rengifo then grounded out to first, driving in Machado, before Gavin Sheets lifted a sacrifice fly to right that brought home France for the third run of the inning.
Colorado starter G. Hughes took the loss, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits over 5.0 innings with 2 strikeouts. The Rockies' only run came in the seventh, when Brett Sullivan singled to right to score Castro, but it wasn't enough to close the gap. Willi Castro and Tyler Freeman each had a hit for Colorado, but the offense could not generate more than the single run all night.
The win extended San Diego's winning streak to five games, improving the Padres to 55-53. Colorado fell to 42-67, extending its losing streak to four. Manny Machado went 1-for-4 with a run scored and remains two games shy of 2,000 for his career.
