The game became a seesaw finish, but the San Diego Padres held off the Colorado Rockies as an early advantage survived Colorado’s late pressure.

Casey Mize anchored San Diego’s start, allowing Colorado to stay within reach while the Padres’ offense built its cushion. Fernando Tatis Jr. supplied a major swing in the second, and Manny Machado opened the scoring with a homer in the first.

Jake Cronenworth’s second-inning single brought Jackson Merrill home and gave San Diego the lead it never relinquished. Freddy Fermin followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Xander Bogaerts, and Tatis’ homer brought Cronenworth across. Jackson Merrill later singled home Ty France, while Dustin Harris doubled home Bogaerts in the eighth.

Colorado kept answering. TJ Rumfield brought Hunter Goodman home in the first and Connor Norby home in the fifth. Jake McCarthy’s triple scored Adael Amador and Ezequiel Tovar in the sixth, and Norby’s groundout brought McCarthy home. Cole Carrigg homered in the seventh, and Norby doubled home Tovar in the eighth, but the rally stopped there.

San Diego extended its winning streak, while Colorado’s losing streak continued. The game’s defining image was the late seesaw: the Rockies kept closing the gap, and the Padres kept finding just enough offense to stay ahead.
