Dylan Cease was nearly untouchable for seven innings. Then the Cubs made sure it didn't matter. Chicago tied the game with a two-run homer in the ninth and won it in the 11th on a throwing error, beating the Blue Jays 3-2 at Wrigley Field.

Cease allowed just two hits and no runs across 7.0 innings, striking out 10 with one walk. It was the kind of start that should have been enough. The Blue Jays led 2-0 when he departed, built on a first-inning run scored by Okamoto on a disengagement violation and a seventh-inning single by Kirk that brought home Giménez. But Toronto's bullpen couldn't hold the door shut. Brendon Little was charged with the loss after allowing one run in just 0.1 innings, and the relief corps combined to allow three runs (two earned) over 3.1 innings.
The Cubs got back into it in the ninth when Bregman homered to left, a two-run shot that also brought home Crow-Armstrong and tied the game at 2-2. Bregman finished 2-for-4 with the homer and both of Chicago's RBIs. The game stayed tied until the 11th, when Crow-Armstrong scored on a throwing error by catcher Valenzuela, giving the Cubs the lead for good.
Toronto out-hit Chicago 11-5, with Kirk going 4-for-5 and Giménez adding three hits including a double, but the Blue Jays could not turn the volume of contact into enough runs. David Peterson allowed one run on seven hits over 5.0 innings, and Toronto's bullpen ultimately let the lead slip away in extra innings.
Trent Thornton picked up the win for Chicago after a scoreless inning of relief, his fifth win of the season. The Cubs improved to 67-49, extending their winning streak to four games. Toronto fell to 54-62.
