Fernando Tatis set the tone before the Mets recorded an out. San Diego never trailed, riding a two-homer night from Tatis and six innings of one-run ball from Robbie Ray to a 5-2 win over New York at Citi Field.

Tatis finished 2-for-5 with two home runs, three RBIs and two runs scored. His first blast, a 452-foot drive to left center, opened the scoring in the first inning. He added a 379-foot shot to right center in the fifth that brought home Jake Cronenworth for a two-run swing. Manny Machado also went deep, going 3-for-4 with a homer, an RBI and a walk, while Ty France drove in a run and sits at 98 career home runs, two shy of 100.
Tatis's leadoff homer in the first inning was the game's decisive blow, giving San Diego a lead it never relinquished. The Padres tacked on in the fifth when Tatis's second homer scored Cronenworth ahead of him, pushing the margin to 3-0 before Luis Torrens answered with a solo homer to center for the Mets. San Diego added insurance in the seventh when Ty France singled to left to score Jase Bowen, and Machado closed the scoring with a solo homer to left center in the ninth.
New York got a homer from Luis Robert in the eighth, a 390-foot shot to center, but it wasn't enough to close the gap. Starter Zach Thornton took the loss, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits with 7 strikeouts over 5.0 innings, and the Mets bullpen worked 4.0 innings and allowed 2 runs. Ray, by contrast, allowed just 1 run (1 earned) on 3 hits over 6.0 innings with 4 strikeouts, and Mason Miller closed it out with a scoreless inning for his 31st save.
Ray improved to 11-7 with a 3.20 ERA and sits two wins from 100 for his career. San Diego improved to 68-59, extending its momentum after snapping a prior skid, while New York fell to 57-70 with the loss marking a second straight defeat.
